Solar Hot Water Heating — Eggert Energy Mechanical Ltd

How solar hot water works

Rooftop collectors capture the sun’s energy and transfer it to a heat-safe fluid. A pump moves that heat into a storage tank through a heat exchanger. Your taps, radiant floors, or pool then draw from that tank. When the sun’s not enough, your boiler or heater tops up automatically.

  • Two main collector types: flat-plate (great all-rounder) and evacuated-tube (strong in colder/overcast conditions).
  • Two main system styles: pressurized glycol (freeze-protected) or drainback (collector drains when off).
  • Works with: domestic hot water tanks, radiant floor manifolds, pool/spa heat exchangers.

Solar hot water — FAQ

Will it work in winter?
Yes, systems are designed for winter safety and can still pre-heat water on sunny days. Your boiler/electric heater covers the rest.
Flat-plate or evacuated-tube collectors?
Both work well. Flat-plate is a great all-rounder; evacuated-tube can perform better in colder/overcast periods. We’ll recommend based on your site and goals.
What about freezing?
We use either glycol (antifreeze) loops or drainback designs so collectors are protected. Your indoor plumbing stays safe.
How much can I save?
Savings depend on hot water use, sun exposure, and energy rates. We’ll model estimates in your quote.
Can I add it to my current tank?
Often yes — via an external heat exchanger or by adding a solar-ready tank/buffer.
